Zantac Litigation

Zantac is a popular over-the-counter medication used by millions across the county to relieve heartburn symptoms and chest pain. However, the medication is also a potential cancer risk.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a recall of all medication containing the ingredient, Ranitidine, including Zantac.  New research reveals that the Ranitidine found in Zantac was too often contaminated by N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a chemical classified as a probable carcinogen by the FDA, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the World Health Organization. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has linked NDMA to a variety of diseases, such as severe liver disease, liver cancer, testicular cancer, and lung cancer.

Millions of people used Zantac for years unaware of the risks, and now some are suffering from cancer, potentially caused by the drug. Zantac’s manufacturer, Sanofi, had a duty to ensure that their customers were safe in using their product, and they failed to satisfy that duty.

An Unseen Risk

In 2019, there was an investigation into NDMA contamination of Ranitidine when Valisure, an independent lab, found some evidence of contamination. Thereafter, the FDA and the sellers of Zantac announced a voluntary recall. Zantac was removed from the shelves in many places, and people were advised to stop using it until further notice.

As evidence mounted, the FDA was forced to issue a full recall in April 2020. Researchers observed that the NDMA contamination in Ranitidine increased as it sat in storage.  The contamination worsened the longer it sat and the hotter the temperature got.

At this time, we are unaware of the full extent of impact caused by the chemical in this product.
